Issues in Human Sexuality Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Issues in Human Sexuality - Essay Example And this depression is exclusive to women, so the article says. ââ¬Å"However, depression scores between females who used to condoms and those who did not engage in sexual intercourse were not significantly different.â⬠I think this last statement is significant. This makes us come to the conclusion that those to who took part in an act of coitus and those who did not are liable to be in a state of depression. If a woman is prone to depression, she can very well be depressed as well as not whether having coitus or not. And in the latter case the question of the antidepressant effects of semen does not arise at all. But most of the studies on the subject points out to the view that semen does act an anti depressant. It is found that ââ¬Å"seminal plasma testosterone, estrogen, follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, prolactin and a number of different prostaglandins.â⬠Many of these compounds are absorbed through the vagina. These postulates were tested methodically at The State University of New York at Albany. The volunteers were from those who attended the upper division undergraduate courses. One could safely state that these were at a stage when they were at the height of sexual activity. The tests produced results that in a large measure agreed with the hypothesis that semen has antidepressant properties in females after sexual intercourse. It was conducted in terms of Beck Depression Inventory or BDI as is popularly known. It is a widely used measure of individual differences in depressive symptoms. But like most tests it did not produce results that conclusively prove the hypothesis. But the deviations that were apparent were not of any great proportions.

Management and organisations Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3500 words
Management and organisations - Essay Example As far as Khurana (2010) is concerned, he has but made a differentiation between university-based business education and private business education because in his view, the legitimacy and credibility imparted to a university-educated business graduate by the industry as well as the general public makes it mandatory that such business students/professionals orient their profession in harmony with public good (Khurana, 2010) . Khurana (2010) has reminded his readers that the 125 years old univerity-based business school system, though initially meant for the professionalisation of management study, is now run by a ââ¬Å"managerialistic logic that emphasized professional knowledge rather than professional ideals, and ultimately by a market logic that taken to its conclusion, subverts the logic of professionalism altogetherâ⬠(p.7). I also agree with this opinion as I have always felt that managers of most business establishments have no problems of conscience in using unethical means to achieve their ultimate end, that is, enhancing the profits of their company. After arguing in this line, Khurana (2010) has called for the balancing of university-based business school education in the favour of ââ¬Å"professionalism and professional leadershipâ⬠(p.20). He (Khurana, 2010) has also stressed the need of this realignment in four areas of the interactions of such business schools, namely, ââ¬Å"student, faculty, business, and society at largeâ⬠(p.20). ... He (Khurana, 2010) has also stressed the need of this realignment in four areas of the interactions of such business schools, namely, ââ¬Å"student, faculty, business, and society at largeâ⬠(p.20). In totality, what Khurana (2010) has tried to focus is the questions related to the abandoning of the notions of public good in management education, which I also feels to be the need of the hour. From the definition offered by Oxford English Dictionary that public good is actually common good, to the definition given by Barley (2007) that ââ¬Å"public good is where externalities happenâ⬠, there are a wide range of definitions for public good (p.202). Calhoun (2006) has reminded that what is expected from a university-based education system are mainly four ââ¬Å"public missionsà ¢â¬ - imparting education for training people in ââ¬Å"occupations traditionally centered on public service,â⬠furthering ââ¬Å"social mobility,â⬠developing ââ¬Å"new technologies,â⬠and providing information needed for ââ¬Å"the public sphere and also prepare the citizens to participate in itâ⬠(p.10). It is also observed that the ââ¬Å"direct governmental financing and governance of universitiesâ⬠is necessitated by the notion that universities have to ââ¬Å"contribute to the public goodâ⬠(Calhoun, 2006, p.10). I want to remind here that whatever finance that reaches universities from the government is actually the taxes paid by the people. But as is criticized by Calhoun (2006), when

Intellectual Property Law - Essay Example The TRIPS agreement carries more force than any other provisions established to promote equitable trade and commerce by the WTO, as it is a mandate whose provisions must be adhered to by all participating members of the WTO (Mercurio, 2004). The TRIPS agreement attempted to provide flexibility for member nations who might receive fewer benefits from the mandated patent rights stipulations; however, soon after its implementation it became apparent to many observers and participants alike that the provisions of the TRIPS agreement were more favourable to economically privileged nations than to member nations of the so-called third world (de Almeida, 1990). One of the most disheartening consequences of the TRIPS agreement was that it had the effect of limiting access to life saving drugs by poorer nations who could not afford the high cost of pharmaceuticals while under patent protection (Mercurio, 2004). This resulted in long delays (often years) between the development of new drugs to treat disease endemic to poorer nations such as HIV-AIDS and their availability in these countries (Abbott, 2005). In its attempt to level the playing field, so to speak, and offer all WHO member nations the same rights of protection for inventions, novel technologies and processes, the TRIPS agreement overlooked the basic fact that member nations of the WHO are not a level playing field, but have individual economic bases that would be unequally served by the implementation of this protective mandate (Ewelukwa, 2005).

Individual project 5 Final - Assignment Example The market research was conducted through the pragmatic approach. The pragmatic approach secures effective cost benefit analysis of the current business environments (Bradley, 2007). Nordstrom Inc is a fashion store targeting the high-end American market. It was initiated by John Nordstrom and Carl Wallin; and its current headquarters is in Seattle area of Washington DC. The company started with the shoe business; but it has grown tremendously and currently stocks cosmetics, accessories, jewelry, handbags and clothing fragrances. In the USA luxury clothing industry, Nordstrom Inc has the largest share of the store locations, and the biggest geographic representation (Gupta, 2005). Segmentation analysis entails dividing a big population into small segments so as to realize socio-demographic determinants of desired behaviors. The characteristics of members of the subpopulation are relatively similar statistically. Common factors of study in segmentation are demographic, behavioral or psychological variables like; education, age, attitudes, income and even sexual orientation (Kotler, 2006). Segmentation analysis integrates these factors into correlated attributes that identify specific population segments. Segmentation enables companies like Nordstrom Inc to produce the desired goods and services that address the requirements of the unique market segments. This will ensure increased market share, and thereafter improved sales and profit margins. Business segmentation analysis supports decision making in companies like Nordstrom. Segmentation is applied in clothing industry to ensure adequate understanding of the lifestyles, concerns or values of the

Food Science - Essay Example The liquid component, which is in the form of droplets suspended in the other component, is known as the disperse, discontinuous, or open phase. The other phase is called the continuous or closed phase. For instance, when oil and water are mixed together vigorously, the oil may be dispersed in water, or the water may be dispersed in oil. In an 'oil in water emulsion', oil forms droplets in water (oil dispersed in water) and in a 'water in oil emulsion', water forms droplets in oil (water dispersed in oil). Fruits can be divided into climacteric and non-climacteric types based on the pattern of respiration during the ripening period. Climacteric fruits include apples, bananas, pears, melons and avocados which have a distinct ripening phase. Non-climacteric fruits include citrus fruits, grapes, strawberry, and pineapple which have no distinct ripening phase. The two classes respond to ethylene quite differently. If immature climacteric fruits are treated with ethylene, the onset of the climacteric and the associated ripening changes is hastened, but the overall pattern of respiration remains unchanged. If non-climacteric fruits are treated with ethylene, the rate of respiration is rapidly increased which leads to changes in colour through loss of chlorophyll, increases in simple sugars and loss of acids. For example, oranges lose chlorophyll Wheat proteins are divided into gluten proteins (generally about 80 to 85% of total wheat protein) and non-gluten proteins (about 15 to 20% of total wheat protein). It is the gluten proteins that largely determine the breadmaking performance of wheat flour. Wheat gluten proteins have the unusual property to form a visco-elastic mass after hydration. When kneading/mixing the flour with water, gluten proteins enable the formation of a cohesive visco-elastic dough that is capable of holding gas produced during fermentation and oven-rise, resulting in the typical fixed open foam structure of bread after baking. Although the dough rheological properties essential for breadmaking are largely determined by the wheat gluten proteins, interactions of the gluten protein matrix with other flour components like flour lipids, non-gluten proteins, may affect its rheological properties. Wheat gluten rheological properties can be modified further by the addition of oxidants, reducing agents, or pro teases that directly change gluten proteins or by the addition of lipids/emulsifiers or hemicelluloses that can modify gluten

Liujiaxia Hydro Power Plant Disturbs Kanbula National Forest Term Paper - 1
Liujiaxia Hydro Power Plant Disturbs Kanbula National Forest - Term Paper Example The development of the town has caused intrusion by humans into the habitat of wildlife which has further damaged the natural life of the forest. Kanbula Forest is located in Northwest of Jianca County of Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous States in Qinghai Province. It has a total area of 15054.4 hectares and altitudes of 2100 to 4000 meters above sea level. Because of its location at high altitude, Kanbula Forest falls in the category of subalpine forest. The forest is also located in the transition zone from Loess Plateau to Qinghai Tibet Plateau. Thus, it is the warmest region in Qinghai Province. It borders on the Yellow River in the North and shares a boundary with the famous Liajiaxia Hydroelectric Power Station. Huge mountains extend from the forest with trees covered resembling a sea of forest. There are deflated hills around the Kanbula Forest that are formed due to erosion from wind and sand. These hills are known as red cloud landforms. Situated in the middle of the mountains, the weather of the forest changes frequently. Instead of experiencing all four seasons, the forest only goes through hot and cold seasons in a year. In the warmer weather, warm and humid air blows, whereas the colder season experiences a cold and windy weather. The forestââ¬â¢s tough topographical features form a role of microclimate. According to meteorological data records, the average temperature of the forest is 1 to 2.9 à °C with the warmest weather experienced in the month of July.
